Vilafranca Community Gardens Project Fully Operational

On 1st of June of 2011, took place the draw for the 15 parcels of Vilafranca urban public gardens. Two of these were aimed at non-profit entities, specifically to Mas Alborna Foundation focused on social inclusion of handicap people, and Caritas Interparroquial Vilafranca, a Christian organization that deals with poverty and social exclusion. There were more applicants than orchards available: seventeen individuals and three entities did not obtain any garden and now they are on the waiting list.

It has been three years of work, which has involved very diverse people, political parties and local authorities. In June 2010 an international work camp named Implementing a Community Garden in Penedès Region was organized, where 19 international volunteers from 12 countries collaborated to set the basis for the creation of the orchards and contributed to spread the project idea.

At this point, we want to thank all the participants for their cooperation. We are sure they will be glad to check that their work was very valuable and it had a continuity making the urban public orchards a reality in Vilafranca.

In the following pictures we can see a child drawing a sketch of the irrigation system with the help of his father inside the house, which has enabled a toilet and a closet to store tools, and a third image, a freshly planted bell pepper.
